Commercial Painting Safety Starts With Certified Lift Operators

September 24, 2026

Safety is a critical part of every commercial painting project, especially when the work requires access to elevated or hard-to-reach areas.

Many commercial properties require the use of specialized equipment such as scissor lifts and boom lifts. Because this equipment plays an important role in completing projects safely and efficiently, proper operator training is essential.

Recently, the Commercial Painting Inc. team completed Aerial Lift / Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) operator training and certification, including both online instruction and hands-on practical training.

With both portions completed, our team is trained and prepared to operate the lift equipment commonly used on commercial painting projects.

Why Aerial Lift Certification Matters

Commercial painting often involves much more than working from the ground.

Exterior elevations, high ceilings, warehouses, apartment communities, churches, office buildings, and other commercial properties may require crews to use aerial lifts to safely reach the work area.

Operating this type of equipment requires specific knowledge and practical experience.

Aerial lift training helps operators understand how to:

  • Identify potential jobsite hazards
  • Inspect equipment before use
  • Understand lift controls and operating procedures
  • Safely position and maneuver equipment
  • Evaluate surrounding ground and surface conditions
  • Recognize overhead and nearby hazards
  • Maintain safe work practices while elevated

For our team, completing the certification process helps ensure that employees are not simply familiar with the equipment, but have also received structured training in proper lift operation and safety.

Online Training and Hands-On Experience

Our certification process included both online training and hands-on practical instruction.

The online portion provided our team with foundational knowledge about aerial lift and MEWP safety, equipment operation, hazard awareness, and operator responsibilities.

The hands-on portion gave employees the opportunity to apply what they learned directly to the equipment.

During practical training, team members were able to work with lifts, become familiar with the controls, and practice operating the machines in a controlled environment.

Combining both types of training is important because safe lift operation requires more than understanding information from a course. Operators also need practical experience using the equipment they may encounter in the field.

Training for Scissor Lifts and Boom Lifts

Commercial painting projects may require different types of aerial equipment depending on the building and the areas being painted.

Two common types of equipment our crews may encounter are scissor lifts and boom lifts.

Scissor lifts are often used when crews need vertical access to elevated work areas. Boom lifts provide additional reach and flexibility when work areas are more difficult to access.

Each type of equipment has different operating characteristics, which is why training and familiarization are important.

Through our recent certification and practical training, our team gained experience with the equipment used to support elevated commercial painting work.

Preparing for Real Jobsite Conditions

Every commercial property presents a different set of challenges.

A crew may need to operate a lift near:

  • Building entrances
  • Vehicles and parking areas
  • Pedestrian walkways
  • Landscaping
  • Other contractors
  • Tenants or employees
  • Uneven or restricted access areas

Before equipment is used, operators need to evaluate the surrounding environment and determine how the lift can be positioned and operated safely.

Training helps reinforce the importance of planning before the platform is ever raised.

This preparation is especially valuable on occupied commercial properties where painting work often needs to continue without significantly disrupting normal building operations.

What Certified Lift Operators Mean for Our Clients

For property managers, facility managers, owners, and general contractors, working with trained crews can contribute to a safer and more organized project.

When a commercial painting project requires aerial equipment, our team is already familiar with the safety procedures and operating practices associated with that equipment.

This helps us approach projects with a greater level of preparation.

Rather than learning equipment operation for the first time on an active jobsite, our certified operators have already completed the necessary training and practical experience.

That preparation supports:

  • Safer equipment operation
  • Better jobsite planning
  • More organized work areas
  • Efficient access to elevated surfaces
  • Greater awareness of surrounding property and occupants
  • Reduced unnecessary disruption during painting operations

Investing in Our Team

At Commercial Painting Inc., training is an ongoing part of how we prepare our employees for the work they perform.

Our aerial lift and MEWP certification is one part of our broader commitment to developing a knowledgeable and safety-conscious team.

Throughout the year, our crews participate in safety training relevant to commercial painting and construction environments.

By continuing to invest in education, certification, and practical training, we help our employees build the skills needed to work responsibly and confidently on commercial properties.

Safety Is Part of Every Project

A successful commercial painting project is not only about the finished appearance.

The planning, preparation, equipment, and people behind the project all matter.

When aerial lifts are required, having trained and certified operators helps make sure that the equipment is being handled by employees who understand their responsibilities and have experience using it.

Our team's completion of aerial lift and MEWP certification strengthens our ability to take on commercial painting projects that require elevated access while maintaining the professional and safety-focused approach our clients expect.

At Commercial Painting Inc., we will continue investing in training that helps our crews improve their skills, work more safely, and better serve commercial properties throughout the Bay Area.
